Local SEO Koh Samui: Common Website Mistakes and How to Fix Them

If you run a small business in Koh Samui and want more locals or tourists walking through your door, local SEO is something worth knowing about. It doesn’t have to be technical, complicated, or expensive.

I’ve been reviewing Koh Samui business websites over the past few months, and the same problems keep coming up. Many owners are doing so much right with great reviews, friendly service, happy customers… but their websites are holding them back.

Here’s what I’ve found while looking at real websites on the island, and how fixing these issues can help your business get more local customers through Google.

1. No Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)

One restaurant I reviewed had no “Book Now” or “Call Us” button anywhere on the homepage. Even worse, the phone number wasn’t clickable on mobile.

With so many tourists searching for places to eat while they’re out and about, this small detail can cost you customers. A clear, working click-to-call button makes it easy for people to take action.

2. Missing Local Keywords

A tour company had a beautiful website but wasn’t using “Samui tour” or similar local search phrases anywhere. That’s a huge missed opportunity.

If your potential customers are searching “Samui snorkelling tour” or “best island tours Samui,” and your site doesn’t include these keywords, Google simply won’t show you. Adding relevant seed keywords and long-tail phrases is essential for better visibility.

3. Not Mentioning Location

I came across a bar that didn’t mention “Bophut” anywhere on its homepage. If Google doesn’t know where you are, it’s less likely to show you in local search results.

Even if your business is well-known locally, tourists who make up a large chunk of potential customers won’t find you unless you clearly state your location in headings, text, and metadata.

4. Poor Use of H1 and H2 Headings

One hotel website I reviewed used “Home” as its main H1 heading. That’s a wasted opportunity.

Search engines rely on H1 and H2 tags to understand what your page is about. A better H1 would have been something like “Luxury Beachfront Hotel in Koh Samui”. Supporting H2s could then break down details like rooms, dining, and facilities.

Getting your heading structure right helps both Google and your visitors quickly understand your site.

5. Not Optimised for Mobile

A tour company I reviewed had a great-looking desktop site, but on mobile, the menu didn’t work, the text overlapped, and the “Book Now” button was hidden off-screen.

With so many people using their phones while travelling, poor mobile optimisation can cost you bookings. Plus, Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning mobile usability directly affects your search ranking.

Why Local SEO Matters in Koh Samui

These mistakes aren’t just cosmetic. They impact whether tourists and locals can actually find you online. Koh Samui is a competitive market, if your competitors have well-optimised sites and you don’t, you’re leaving money on the table.
